“In Muzaffar Iqbal’s Inkhila’, his first novel and part of a trilogy, the readiness to experiment and deference to the dictates of artistry just about hang in balance. Here is a slice of life which mirrors some of the historical pressures as well as the misgivings and predicaments the Pakistani society is cracking under... One of the most beautiful episodes in the novel is Yashb’s visit, immediately after his return from the dead to the uplands in the north... in the vast stillness of the high altitudes he can listen to the voice inside him, to the slow stir of ancient memories, made up of words nearly forgotten... It is a dark novel in which many strands of pain and unfulfillment glimmer again and again...
Muzaffar’s novel has an unmistakable mystical undertone. It is the dark night of the soul in which things are found or identities lost or vice versa. The trilogy, one assumes, will follow suit, with solar images and illumination dominating the third part. Or would the darkness get more intens towards the end? I would rather not predict.
Muzaffar’s prose is an amalgam with uncomplicated narrative suddenly bursting into purple blossoms. There are patches of prose poems or passages which read like prose poems. He has a liking for unusual words, a predilection reflected in the book’s title...

[The novel] goes back into history, at least to the time of Babur, who is the ancestor of one of the main characters, Yashab Ahmad... He does not name his city but we can recognize it as Lahore from its description and the powerful evocation of its seasons and their changes. Practically the whole of the action of the novel, such as it is, takes place within this city, and within the small circle of the University teachers and students who are associated with Yashab Ahmad. They are closely related and associated with one another in a period of extreme political conflict and tension—the period from the mass upsurge of the late sixties, through the civil strife of 1971 and the breakup of Pakistan, the chaotic process of the early seventies until the coup d'etat of 1977 ending up with the execution of Mr. Z. A. Bhutto...

سہ برگہ کہ پہلی کتاب، “انخلاع”، کی طرح اس دوسری کتاب، انقطاع، کے کردار بھی اپنے وجود کا گہرا شعور رکھتے ہیں۔ یہ آگہی انہیں اپنے باطن کے اسرار کو سمجھنے پر اکساتی ہے۔ اس سفر میں وہ فہم اور جذبے کے ایک ایسے امتزاج کے متلاشی ہیں جو انہیں سرد عقلیت سے محفوظ رکھتے ہوئے اس اساسی مرکز تک لے جا سکے جو ذات کا سرنہاں ہے۔ اس سفر میں انہیں جس کرب سے گزرنا پڑتا ہے اس کے بارے میں وہ کوئی شکایت کرتے نظر نہیں آتے بلکہ یوں محسوس ہوتا ہے کہ انہوں نے سمجھ لیا ہے کہ سچائی تک پہنچنے کے لیے یہ کرب ناگزیر ہے۔ ان کے باہمی رشتے اس شفاف داخلی آگہی کے باعث باطن میں جڑیں پھیلائے ہوئے ہیں۔ ایک دوسرے کے لئے وہ ایک غیر جانبدار احساس وابستگی رکھتے ہیں جس کی بدولت ان کے تعلقات میں ایک ایسا روحانی عنصر شامل ہو گیا ہے جس نے ان رشتوں کو دوسروں کو جاننے کے ساتھ ساتھ خود کو پہچاننے کا وسیلہ بھی بنا دیا ہے۔
مزاحمت اور جدوجہد سے عبارت ان کی زندگیاں ہمیں ایسے افراد سے متعارف کرواتی ہیں جو ماضی کے طلسم سے آشنا ہیں لیکن ساتھ ہی ساتھ عہد حاضر کی سفاک حقیقتوں کے درمیان زندگی گزارنے کی ہمت بھی رکھتے ہیں۔ داخلی دریافتوں کا یہ حیرت انگیز رزمیہ زندگی کے اس قدیم اور ارفع روپ کی تجسیم کی ایک کوشش بھی ہے جو ان اساسی جذبات کو ازسرنو وقعت عطا کر سکے جو ہمیشہ سے وقت کے بے رحم جبر میں انسان کے معاون اور مددگار رہے ہیں: محبت اور ایثار، رحمدلی ، جرات اور تحمل۔
